NIGERIA JOINS GLOBAL COMMUNITY TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY

literacy DayLiteracy Day is celebrated annually worldwide on September 8.

It brings together governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sectors, communities, teachers and other experts in relevant fields to reflect on ways of overcoming challenges in learning process.

As the global community marks the International Literacy Day, Key players in the education sector want zero tolerance for examination malpractice and other sharp practices that affect the growth of the sector.

Speaking on this year’s International Literacy Day, one of the stakeholders and Enugu State Commissioner for Education, Professor Uche Eze explained that education in primary and junior secondary schools were free in the State.

Professor Ezeh who encouraged parents and guardians to utilize the free education to educate their children, explained that the Enugu State Ministry of Education had streamlined its policies to include self development through skills acquisition and computer studies in addition to reading and writing.

In his submission, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers, Enugu State Chapter, Comrade Ozo Paul Nnaji emphasized that teachers in the area are committed to service in line with the ethics of the profession.

The Project Coordinator, Coal City Literacy Forum, Mrs. Maureen Atuonwu and a Publisher, Mr. UcheAnioke explained that literacy was vital for self survival and development.

The theme of this year’s International Literacy Day, “Literacy in a Digital World”, appraises the kind of literacy skills people need in present time and the opportunities that the digital world provides.
