VARIOUS GOVERNMENTS URGED TO ADHERE TO THE RULE OF LAW ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL DEMOCRACY DAY

international_day_of_democracy_logo-wbAs the world celebrate this year’s International Day of Democracy, some Key Players in the nation’s polity want Nigerians to embrace Peace, inclusiveness and transparency in governance and daily life.

The theme of this year’s celebration, “Democracy and Conflict Prevention  could not have come at a better time owing to the myriad of socio-economic, security and industrial challenges facing the country, Africa and the world at large.

There are the raging fratricidal conflicts in South Sudan, Central African Republic, the disputed election in Kenya, the humanitarian crisis in Burma and the face-off between North Korea and the United Nations Security Council.

Speaking on the day, the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, NnamdiAzikiwe University Awka, Professor Chinyere Okunna explained that Democracy demands respect for the rule of law, free and fair elections, accountability from those in authority and civility from the people.

Professor Okunna while appreciating fellow Nigerians for embracing Democracy, urged them to shun hatred, bitterness, greed, discrimination and violence.

She encouraged Leaders in Africa to promote Peace, Democratic and inclusive  societies, free and fair elections and sanctity of human life.

In his submission, the Leader,  Enugu State House of Assembly, Chief Ikechukwu Ezeugwu noted that Democracy had come to stay in the country.

Chief Ezeugwu urged Nigerians to be united and work conscientiously for a better society.

What are the views of people on the state of physical infrastructure and the on-going strike by some Professional Associations in the country, the Chairman Nigeria Labour Congress, Enugu State Chapter, Comrade Virginus Nwobodo and the Director General, Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Mr. Emeka Okereke  encouraged Government to maintain steady communication with the organized Labour and also ensure that contracts especially on roads were executed with specifications and within the time frame.
